Crimson Rush

Chapter One

The air was thick with pure - raw energy. Wave after wave of electricity seemed to sweep across my skin. My chest was so tight with anxiety; it became a struggle just to draw air into my lungs.

They were all around me.

I imagined that I could feel their hunger - their bloodlust. On each end of the stage, there was a large steel cage. Inside those cages were scantily clad women whose bodies moved seductively to the beat of the music.

The black and red decor, combined with the multi colored flashing lights, created a surreal atmosphere. It was almost like being in another reality.

As I eyed the crowd, a bizarre mixture of locals and Goth junkies who came to the club to live out their darkest fantasies, I caught sight of a pretty, but pale redhead standing in a corner. She wore a short black skirt and matching halter top. Her Stiletto heels gave the impression that she was several inches taller than she was. The only color to her was her flaming red hair and blood red lips.

The redhead had her eyes fixed on the young man sitting at the table next to ours. Just by looking at him, I could tell he was a jumble of nerves. He was tapping his fingers against the top of the table, as one leg swayed back and forth to the music.

He didn’t have a clue that the girl with the red hair was watching him.

As she watched him, she ran a tongue across her already shiny lips. She wanted the young man, but not for the reason one might assume. It was the blood pumping through his veins that drew her to him.

Swallowing hard, I forced myself to look away.

Vampires!

They hunted these willing victims, most not even bothering to disguise their bloodlust.

The sane part of me wanted to jump up and run away, as fast and as far as I could, but then I would see Max in my head. I was haunted relentlessly by the vision of his existence in a black - empty void. It was the image of by best friend that kept me in my seat.

He was the reason I was here. I had to go through with this.

Just breathe!

I had to keep telling myself this, otherwise I’d pass out from lack of oxygen.

I couldn’t think of a single time in my life, when I’d been more terrified, or fascinated.

Luke grasped my hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. “No worries darling. I’m right here with you,” he told me, his words colored with a slight Australian accent.

Yeah right! No worries.

That was easy for Luke to say, on account of him being a vampire and this being a vampire bar.

Leaning down, he whispered, “This is not so much what you’re used to seeing in Cookson Springs.”

That was probably the understatement of the year. Cookson Springs was a small town in Eastern Oklahoma, not really much more than a spot in the road. The most exciting thing to happen in Cookson was Moon Fest, which took place in September, and McDonalds. At least that’s the way it had been until Club Crimson opened its doors. That’s when all hell broke loose.

I opened my mouth to respond, but was cut short when someone stepped on the stage and picked up the microphone. At first I thought he was another vampire, which was an understandable mistake, when you took into consideration his corpse-like appearance. His almost translucent skin covered a too thin body. If someone could be described as skin and bones, this boy certainly fit that profile. The brown hair plastered against his skull, and his sunken dark eyes, added to the illusion that he was death incarnate.

The boy started to say something, but the mic squealed as it came to life. A moment later the sound faded to be replaced by his voice.

“Tonight we have a special treat for all you metal lovers out there!”

And bloodsuckers. I couldn’t help but add silently.

“Some of you may have heard of these guys … some of you not. Tonight they are going to play a few tunes for you, and they rarely perform live … so this is a real treat.”

The boy was interrupted by the cheers coming from the crowd.

“Are you feeling lucky yet?” he yelled out at them.

The cheering grew louder.

“Night Reign!” he screamed.

Even before his voice had stopped echoing in my head, the room went dark. Suddenly, red light flooded the stage. As I watched, the stage began to fill with rolling fog.

The air around me erupted with applause and screams. The audience was going crazy - many of them jumping to their feet.

If it were not for the fact that our table was only a few feet from the stage, I wouldn’t have been able to see a thing without standing.

Thunder seemed to roll right through the building, shaking it to its very foundation. Unexpectedly, the stage erupted in an inferno that was so close, I was sure my hair was singed. When the flames died away, there were four men on the stage.

Again the crowd went into a wild frenzy.

I’d heard of the band before, but the memory was hazy. I didn’t recognize any of the band members, but that didn’t stop me from gawking as if I were seeing my first sunrise.

I barely saw the other band members. It was the one who stepped forward who caught my attention, or more accurately, mesmerized me.

As his fingers slid across the strings of the shiny black guitar, the room came alive with sound and energy.

One of the men ran around to the drums at the back of the stage, the other two took their places to each side of the guy with the magic fingers.

I pulled my eyes away long enough to glance over at Luke, and was shaken by the look of utter astonishment on his face.

The words were on my tongue. I wanted to ask him what was wrong, but even if I’d been able to keep my attention off the stage long enough to question him, there were doubts he would hear me.

The amplifiers were so loud that I could feel my heart thumping in rhythm with the bass. I let my eyes stray back to the man who had the guitar screaming out a tune that was as electrifying, as the sparks flying from the bottom of the stage.

As quickly as the music had erupted into chaos, it slowed to a haunting - dark melody that was just as hypnotic.

But it wasn’t just the music that had me feeling like a deer frozen in the path of oncoming headlights, it was also the man creating the music. He was tall - taller than the other members of Night Reign.

His face was framed with a mane of wild blonde hair that fell in waves across his wide - bare shoulders.

He was amazing - even breathtaking.

Although the words of his song were frighteningly sinister, his smooth - silky voice was soothing enough to persuade the soul to accept that darkness. I found myself yearning to get closer to him - to know that darkness on a very intimate level.

Just then, his eyes locked with mine, and as if against my will, I felt myself sinking into the searing blue flames that reached out to burn their way into my soul.

No matter how I tried, I could not force myself to look away.

He was there - everywhere, in my head, my soul - reaching out to touch the very essence of my being. His tight - black leather pants and bare chest was enough to melt any woman’s resistance, but it was the heat of his gaze that set my body on fire.

Luke snapped his fingers in front of my eyes, successfully breaking the spell.

“Don’t do it darling,” he warned. “He’ll rip you apart and leave you for the buzzards.”

“What are you talking about?” I asked.

His smile was all knowing and irritating. “You know exactly what I’m talking about.”

When I looked back at the stage, he was still watching me. Almost immediately, I felt myself surrendering again. This time I tore my eyes away.

“I need some air,” I told Luke, before jumping to my feet.

Pushing my way through wall-to-wall people was no easy task, but finally I managed to make it to the exit. I tore through the door of Club Crimson like I were being chased by the hounds of hell.

The night air was balmy, but fresh. I drew in deep breaths of oxygen, hoping the fresh air would help to calm my nerves.

With my attention being so focused on the simple act of breathing, at first I didn’t pay any mind to the moans I was hearing. The sound just didn’t register until the groaning grew louder - more erratic.

It was coming from the shadows beyond the neon lights of the club, but I wasn’t sure from where exactly. I started in the direction the sound seemed to be the loudest.

On the side of the white brick building, I found a blue dumpster. This is where the moans seemed to be coming from.

My head filled with images of murder victims - stuffed in dumpsters, only to be found later in the local landfill.

The sound of my stomach churning was nearly as loud as the groans, but there wasn’t much choice but to get some backbone and look inside the dumpster.

Being short has its drawbacks, and it would seem that one of them was looking into tall dumpsters. Even in my three-inch pumps, I had to strain to see over the edge of the oversized metal trashcan.

What little illumination there was, came from the outside lighting attached to the eaves of the building. Unfortunately, they didn’t do a lot to light up the interior of the dumpster. All I could see was an old pair of white running shoes, thrown carelessly on top of a pile of smashed cardboard boxes.

It would appear that the owners of Club Crimson weren’t much concern with recycling.

There was another groan, followed by a muffled whimper. Now I could tell that it wasn’t coming from inside the dumpster at all, but from behind it.

Slowly I stepped around the dumpster, but froze when I rounded the corner. I was too shocked to look away, though that’s exactly what I should have done.

The woman who was making all the noise had her back up against the white brick, but her legs were wrapped around the waist of a man. As he held her hips, he slammed into her with so much force, the skin on her back had to be rubbed raw.

I’m not sure whether it was the noise of my pumps clicking against the blacktop, or instinct, but the man pulled his face away from the woman’s neck to peer at me.

A scream caught in my throat.

He hadn’t been kissing her neck like it had first appeared. The man - the vampire, had been feeding from her while they were having sex.

Skinwalkers – Witching the Wolf

Announcing the release of the second book in the Skinwalkers Trilogy. Witching the Wolf picks up where the last book ends.

Sometimes saying I love you, also means saying goodbye

Mya Reynolds was conceived in a world of witches and demons, but it’s a world she doesn’t know, not until her ill-fated summer on the Navajo Indian Reservation. There she discovers a world that exists just below the surface of reality, and like many before her, she also discovers that loving the wolf can have disastrous consequences.

David Bray is the alpha of the wolf people, known to the Native Americans as the Sinapu. His destiny is with the wolves. This is a fate he has always accepted, until the day he set eyes on Mya.

David and Mya share a forbidden love, a love destined to bring them heartache and despair.

After being separated from David for months, Mya is lured back the reservation by the Sinapu’s enemies. They will use David’s love for her to destroy the wolves.

If Mya can uncover the mysterious circumstances surrounding her birth, she might be able to stop the Skinwalkers from destroying her lover, but will it be enough to stop a predestined fate?

  Witching the Wolf

   Excerpt

 Chapter One

She was trapped. With her back against the rocky cliffs, there was nowhere left to go - no place to run. From the darkness, she could see his radiant silver eyes – hungry eyes that would devour her body and soul.

Mya searched for a way to escape, but it was no use.

Then he emerged from the shadows. Beneath the light of the moon, he appeared ethereal - almost divine.

Her knees grew weak and she felt as if the breath had been knocked out of her. No matter what she did, she could not pull enough oxygen into her lungs.

Reaching behind her, Mya’s hand searched for something to hold onto to – anything that would keep her on her feet. It was impossible to tear her eyes from the tall - powerful figure steadily moving in her direction.

A soft breeze teased at the long black hair that fell across his wide shoulders, making him seem even more feral than he already did. He stood before her - his natural splendor illuminated by the pale moonlight.

The magnetic allure of his eyes drew her in – coaxing her to surrender her will.

A familiar feeling of warmth stirred deep within her. She could not still the trembling as heat coursed through her body like liquid fire.

Now he was in front of her - so close she could feel the heat radiating from his body. Her eyes were drawn to the sight of muscle moving beneath the smooth skin of his chest.

Air rushed from her lungs when she felt his firm thigh forcing her legs apart. There was no time for thought or protest.

His mouth was on her throat and she could feel his sharp teeth scraping against her tender flesh.

She felt no fear, only an intense - all consuming heat. Her need for him erupted into something beyond anything she could comprehend.

Fear clawed at her consciousness. She was afraid of what he was - of what he could do to her, but her body betrayed her. Like an animal, instinct took over. Her hands went to his shoulders and she pulled him closer.

His mouth claimed hers and she found herself being pulled into an inferno that threatened to overwhelm her entire being. It was only the pain of his teeth nipping at her kiss-swollen lips that kept her from slipping away to that point of no return.

Suddenly she was being ripped from her dream world. No matter how hard she tried, she could not hold on to him. The vision evaporated like puffs of smoke rising into an endless sky.

    Mya’s eyes fluttered open.

She still trembled with the need her dream had invoked.

    But something had awakened her?

The stiff muscles in her back and shoulders screamed in protest as she tried to get into a sitting position. Sleeping in the front seat of her car was probably not one of the wisest things she’d ever done, but she’d been too tired to keep driving.

Mya looked around the empty rest stop. She was in the middle of nowhere - someplace between Flagstaff and Window Rock.

It wasn’t really a rest stop, but more of a pull off with a small table and an outhouse.

Her eyes strayed to the half moon suspended high above the rocky cliffs to the east. Mya noted that it had moved little since she’d pulled over and closed her eyes.

She probably hadn’t slept longer than an hour, but maybe it was enough that she could make it the rest of the way to Window Rock. The last thing she needed was to end up driving her car off the side of the road because she was too sleepy to drive.

She’d only meant to rest her eyes for a few minutes, but had quickly fallen into a deep sleep. Like most nights, her dreams were haunted by visions of David. It had been months since she’d left the Navajo Reservation. She’d hoped to hear from him, but there hadn’t been a word.     According to Uncle Donny, no one had seen him since she’d been gone.

The fact that he was keeping a low profile didn’t surprise her, considering the threat of the Skinwalkers.

But still, why hadn’t he at least sent word that he was okay?

The low - ominous growl sent shards of fear into her heart.

It was coming from just outside her car.

Mya’s eyes flew to the window. At first all she could see were shadows, but suddenly one of those shadows moved.

Her heart jumped into her throat.

Nightmarish visions scrambled to the front of her mind. Once again the memories were crowding in on her - memories that she’d spent the last several months trying to forget. Her time in Arizona would be forever tainted by the murders of her parents and best friend.

David had warned her to stay away.

The Skinwalkers would do anything to bring the alpha wolf do his knees, even if that meant killing the one they’d created to destroy him.

Is he were to die, she would still serve her purpose. Killing her would distract David and prevent the Changing.

It had taken all her strength to keep from returning to the reservation to find him, but then Trent Metzger had called and asked for her help. He’d been arrested for the murder of a young Navajo woman.

Trent claimed he had nothing to do with it, and though she might be a little crazy, Mya believed him.

Trent’s family was deeply involved with the Navajo witches more commonly known as Skinwalkers. In fact, most people on the reservation believed Trent Metzger himself was a Skinwalker.

Unlike the Sinapu, who were true shifters, the Skinwalkers were evil practitioners of the dark arts. According to legend, the Tchin'dih were demons that possessed the bodies of the Skinwalkers. It was these demons that gave them their power.

Trent’s people were Skinwalkers, but he hadn’t embraced the Tchin'dih.

Because Trent had once saved her life, Mya decided to make the trip back to Arizona to see what she could do to help.

Returning to the reservation brought back all her old fears and anxieties.

Was it possible that anxiety was causing her mind to play tricks on her?

Maybe there wasn’t really anything out there in the dark.

Forcing herself to breathe, Mya tried to remain calm.

    It was nothing.

There was no way they could have tracked her already.

    Mya froze.

The growls had now turned to snarls. Something crashed against the car so hard that it rocked.

Startled, Mya shrieked in terror, but quickly clasped her hand over her mouth.

She reminded herself that screaming would accomplish nothing but to let them know she was afraid. The Skinwalkers would feed off her fear and become stronger.

   She had to think.

It had to be Skinwalkers. They wanted to scare her. If they terrorized her, she would be that much easier to subdue.

Shaking, Mya turned the key in the ignition. Nothing happened. The starter wouldn’t even turn over.

They had done something to her car while she slept.

How had they found her so quickly?

The Skinwalkers had to have been waiting for her. Somehow they’d picked up her trail and followed her after she’d crossed onto the reservation. They’d lured her back to the Arizona and right into their trap.

Through her terror, it dawned on Mya that there were several sets of eyes staring at her from the darkness. These were not the eyes of Skinwalkers, but the eyes of wolves - the Sinapu.

They were no more than inky silhouettes against the full moon, and although the Sinapu were in human form, a surreal light radiated from their eyes.
The car doors were already locked, though she knew locked doors wouldn’t stop them. The thought had just formed when the passenger side door was ripped from its hinges. There was no time to react. She felt hands on her arms, yanking her from the car.

Bad Moon Rising – Book 1 of the Skinwalkers Trilogy

Skinwalkers - Bad Moon Rising

When love takes you to the threshold of ecstasy … and death.

Mya Reynolds lives a painfully ordinary life - that is until she makes the mistake of looking into the eyes of the Sinapu alpha, discovering an all consuming love that threatens to destroy her and everyone near her.

David Bray has sworn to do everything he can to protect the people. But when his duty requires that he kill the one woman that has managed to capture his heart, he is torn between love and what he knows must be done.

The skinwalkers are an ancient race - practitioners of the dark arts and the living vessels of demons. They have the ability to take the shape of animals and humans alike, and never for good.

The Sinapu are the earthly incarnations of the wolf spirit. It is their duty to protect the heart of the people, but the skinwalkers want access to the heart and will stop at nothing to get it.

When Mya Reynolds agrees to take an internship with the tribal police, she unwittingly steps into the middle of an epic battle between good and evil, but too often the lines are blurred and she cannot be sure whom she can trust.

Book Length – Over 57,000 words

Finally Back Online

Hello Everyone

I need to apologize for the long delay since my last post. I was in the middle of a move and there was just so much more work involved than what we had anticipated. I’ve just now reached the point where I can do more than just check my email. Unfortunately this means that there will be a delay in the release of the last book in the Immortal Destiny Series, but I hope to have the fourth book available before the end of the year.

Busy Summer

It has been such a busy summer. Not only am I working on the last book of the Immortal Destiny Series, but our family has had weddings galore this year, and I am packing to move. Thankfully things are moving along fairly well, and once we are settled in I hope to be able to update this blog a lot more frequently. I anticipate releasing the last book in the Immortal Destiny Series by the end of October, if everything goes smoothly.

With the little spare time I’ve had, I have been watching old episodes of the X Files. I used to love that program and hope that they make another feature movie for 2012.

Highway 666 – The Devil’s Road

In the spirit of the season I thought I would include a story about a local legend.

The stretch of highway that was once known as Route 666, is known for being one of the spookiest roads in America. For years there have been stories of phantoms on this road and unfortunate accidents. Today this highway is known as Highway 191, but the eerie stories continue.

Over the years many people have reported encounters with UFOs on this road, packs of demon dogs, and a phantom trucker that tries to run people down. There have also been many stories about a young girl wearing a nightgown that see walking down the side of the road. When they stop to ask the girl if she needs assistance, she vanishes. When traveling down this road a number of people have reported looking into their rearview mirrors to see someone riding in the back seat, when there should be no one there.

Many of the local people claim that you will encounter Skinwalkers on this road, which are though to be evil medicine men that have the abilities of shapeshifters.

The second book in the Realm of the Wolf series is Moon Calling. I have not yet received a release date for these books, but will update as soon as I do.

New Years in the Rockies

We have been having some very cold and snowy weather here in the Rocky Mountain States. Christmas was wonderful, if a little too cold. The cold weather does give me more opportunity to work on new projects for the coming year, so hopefully there should be many new stories to look for this year.

Sequel to Wolf Dance

In the coming year there are plans for several projects, including a sequel to Wolf Dance. There are also plans for another release of Wolf Dance, with some additions to the story. For news of these developments and other projects you can visit http://www.lorrainekennedy.com for updates.

Wolf Dance

Wolf Dance has gone out of contract, but I am working with the publishing to bring it back. This will be a newer, longer and more carnal version of the story. In fact, Wolf Dance will be the starting point of a series that will focus on the characters in Wolf Dance and some new characters as well.

Check back regularly for new of the re-release of Wolf Dance and other books that will go with this story.
