The chill faded, replaced by comforting numb. She had to be dying or already dead.

This must be what it was like to die of hypothermia.

She’d always had a strange fascination with death. What was it like to die of decapitation, or starvation?

Not once had it ever crossed her mind that her end would come in this way.

Sure, there were worse ways to die, but to die of cold seemed too simple.

She could almost hear Nana Kerry telling her how morbid she was being.

Well she was dying, so she figured she had a right to be a little morbid about it.

Closing her eyes, she let her mind drift to another time - another place.

Logic told her that what she was seeing and hearing had to be a memory, but it wasn’t. She’d never been to this place and never experienced what she was seeing, but she did recognize one face within the foggy vision.

Abigail.

Hailey floated over the scene, watching, as if she were an earthbound ghost pulled into something she had no understanding of.

It was dark, except for the flickering light of two candelabras. She had no sense of smell or temperature, but the room reminded her of a cave, or maybe a hidden space in some basement.

The air was dank and cold. She couldn’t pick this up with her physical senses, but she just knew.

Abigail was kneeling before a man with skin so pale it almost appeared translucent, which was a startling contrast to his shiny black hair. The intensity brimming in his dark eyes grabbed at another memory - a real memory.

It was a warm spring day. She was almost nine years old, which was old enough to walk home from school on her own. At least that’s what her foster parents thought.

The fastest way to get home was through the alley that cut between Sixth Street and Crossway Boulevard. With the tall buildings on each side of the narrow alley, it wouldn’t matter what time of day it was, there would be shadows.

She always picked up her pace when walking through the alley. Not quite running, but not really taking a leisurely stroll either.

She’d almost gotten halfway through the alley when she heard the growls - angry ferocious growls that sent shards of ice right into her stomach.

She froze, except for her eyes, which she forced to look in the direction of a large dumpster overflowing with trash.

She sensed movement in the shadows.

The dog jumped at her from behind the dumpster, but stopped before reaching the light. Yelping, it scurried back into the darkness, but not before she’d gotten a good look at the Boxer’s eyes.

The dog’s eyes were insane with rage.

Rabies. That’s what it had to be.

A rabid animal would avoid the light. She’d heard that once on a nature show.

Maybe she’d be okay, as long as she walked slowly.

She took a few sluggish steps.

The dog growled, but didn’t come after her again. Hailey kept moving. Once she was by the dumpster, she turned so that she was walking backwards.

No way was she going to turn her back on that dog.

After she’d gone twenty feet, she turned and ran like the hounds of hell were after her.

She got away, but she’d never forgotten the look in that dog’s eyes.

Now she was seeing it again, but there was more. The dog had just been mad, but the gleam of madness she saw in the man’s eyes wasn’t really the same. He wasn’t crazy, he was mad with hunger.

Still it didn’t end there. There was dimension to his eyes, and a strange kind of beauty that she’d never seen before.

That wasn’t really true.

She’d seen it once before, in the eyes of the guy that bit her - in the vampire’s eyes.

The man she was looking at wasn’t a man at all. He was a vampire.

“Lord Beaufort.” Abigail’s voice was small, even timid. She was far from the young woman who’d abducted her, stashing her in the trunk of a car.

“Do you have Kathrina?” he asked, his voice as smooth as silk, but at the same time, managed to be as sharp as a razor.

Abigail shook her head. “I’m sorry.”

The man’s eyes narrowed and his voice grew even sharper. “What about the girl of light? Do you have her?”

Again Abigail shook her head. “Not exactly, but we have made sure she is in a safe place.”

Waving away her words, the vampire jumped to his feet and began pacing the floor. “Your plans have been useless. We are no closer to Kathrina than we were a year ago.”

“That’s not true.” Sparks showered from the witch’s eyes, but her voice remained calm, even soothing.

“Getting to Kathrina is impossible. The sisters are watched too closely, especially her. She is with Luciano. There’s no way to get to her, but we have a plan. We will get someone she trusts to bring her to us.”

“That is a flimsy plan, Miss Abigail.” The vampire made no effort to hide his distaste of the witch.

Ignoring his comment, Abigail went on. “We will use Hailey to convince the Light Seekers to help us. One of them is a close friend of Kathrina’s.”

“If this person is such a good friend … what makes you think they will help?”

“He wants the girl, Hailey,” she told him.

“But you don’t have the girl!” he shouted. “Anything could happen.”

“Even so, we will get Kathrina. We have a backup plan.”

“That is?”

“We will grab her ourselves.”

The vision faded.

Hailey struggled to hold onto it, but the image and voices were gone.

New Beginning for Immortal Destiny and Much More

Only five days until the first volume of The Light Seekers will be released. I am excited to continue the Immortal Destiny Series. It feels a little like visiting old friends. Many of the characters that were first introduced in previous Immortal Destiny books will be included in the Light Seekers, but you will also meet some new characters.

Hailey and Sean are the main characters, but like the other Immortal Destiny books, the story will continue for all the characters you have come to know.

As an extra for those who are following the Immortal Destiny Series, a fictional news blog will launch this week. Shadow Lands Gazette will bring you news from the fringes, as well as news of what is happening in the Immortal Destiny Universe.

Through the Shadow Lands Gazette you will have the opportunity to learn more about places and events in the series. This publication will also give you the opportunity to get to know your favorite characters better, and give you clues of upcoming events in new books.

Speaking of new beginnings, some of you may be aware that I went through a particularly difficult divorce four years ago from a very vindictive man. Although my former spouse continues to harass me in various ways, I have found my new beginning. In April I married my former sweetheart. We parted over a decade ago, but found each other again. I will forever be grateful to whatever higher power maneuvered that one. He is a wonderful man and we fit together so well. Due to the fact that he is a musician, he can understand that part of me that must create.

Ten years after the Jaguar Wars

He’d know her scent anywhere, it was forever engraved in his memory. Being this close to his prey was driving him to madness. His fury erupting, he let out a low - angry growl as he watched her through his wolf’s eyes. In the fading light he could see her leaning against the hood of the car, her gaze fixed on the horizon.

The rest stop was miles from civilization, on a desolate and rarely traveled highway. Now would be the time, but he remained hidden in the thick brush - watching his prey.

He’d been sent to eliminate her. The female was a danger. They thought she knew too much.

The persistent wind played havoc with her blond tresses. It was easy to see that she’d been out in the sun far too long, as her cheeks were flushed red. Even from this distance he could sense her fatigue, but still he waited.

With her legs spread slightly, she leaned over to reach into her car, grabbing something. When she did this, he got a good look at her inner thighs, and the way that her tight - white shorts highlighted her slight feminine physique.

Lust tore through his body, confusing and enraging him. He howled in protest. Human thought could easily intrude - even while he was in his animal form, but it battled with the instinct of the beast.

Pulling out a sandwich, she started to eat as the last rays of sunshine vanished and the moon began its ascent. The wide-open expanse of the Wyoming desert provided a view of the darkening sky for miles, the brightness of the twinkling stars was outshined by moonlight. A cloud passed - obscuring the moon, casting the night in deeper shadows.

Painful hunger gnawed at his loins, and again he howled. The human female froze, her senses picking up on the danger that lurked in the darkness, beyond the glow of the lit parking lot. Her hand strayed to the gun that she’d stuck in the waistband of her shorts, as if the feel of the cold - hard steel was comforting to her.

Far off in the distance, the mist was gathering around the Shadow Mountains.

Still he watched and waited.
